U15s - Match Report

Season 'UnValed'

(Dave Robinson 02/10/2017)

11    Congleton Rovers JFC U15s
1    Vale Juniors Congleton U15 Vikings

(Match Date: Sunday 1st October 2017)
Rovers made a fabulous start to the new campaign with a determined and intelligent display to take local honours in this well contested derby day season opener against Vale Juniors.

The team set the pace from the whistle and their intent was soon rewarded with a brace of early goals. Lead by the central powerhouse of Clark and Barnes, Rovers were immediately on the offensive. Herd opened the scoring with a fine shot which found the top corner of the net. Captain Barnes, soon followed opening his account for the season with a driving run before a fine finish saw the ball in the back of the Vale net. Crewe made it three with another fine shot as Rovers turned possession and endeavour into dominance. It was very apparent that a major improvement from the previous season in the passing, movement and link up play was evident with players taking a calm extra touch and looking for the right pass, from defence through midfield, using the width of the pitch wherever possible. The fourth goal came from the flanks as Perry cut in and drove a low ball across the goal for the incoming Crewe to tap home. Frost and Barnes almost added to the score line before the end of the first half following some superb build up play. Barnes then got his second and Rovers fifth with a low range shot into the bottom right which brought an excellent first half to an end.

The second half was enjoyably more of the same. Robinson almost made it five with a driving shot from the edge of the area which thundered off the post. Rovers did get their sixth shortly after as Perry converted a penalty having been brought down in the area. Frost then made it seven with another great shot. Whilst the ever increasing score line showed the overall dominance, Vale did pose a regular threat with long balls over the top and the margin of lead was very much down to some excellent sweeping defending by man of the match Molloy and Dolman whilst Lancaster and Simpson were solid in the middle, dealing effectively with a series of high balls and were key to Rovers retaining possession and starting the next attack. League debutants, Webster and Dale fitted in very well and produced strong opening performances as Rovers refused to loosen their grip on the game. Following further pressure, the eighth and ninth goals came from well worked corners as Herd and Crewe headed home from close range to secure his hat trick! Crewe then struck the post before Vale pulled a consolation goal back following a penalty area scramble. Rovers response summed up their game, Barnes scoring the tenth, and his hat trick in fine style with a solo run and a lovely chip over the advancing Vale keeper. Perry rounded off a fantastic afternoon using his speed and close ball control to burst through into the area and finish well making it an electric eleven!

A superb start to the season which the team can take great confidence in. Not only was the attacking play clinical and effective but the control of the game and the strong defensive leadership shown, give the team a great platform in all departments to build into a great season ahead.

Team: Muirhead, Dale, Webster, Dolman, Molloy, Lancaster, Herd, Barnes (c), Clark, Robinson, Simpson, Crewe, Frost, Perry.
